Montedónico Event

Montedónico, one of the neighborhoods in which we work, was the location of a community sports and cultural event of Playa Ancha on Saturday, May 9th. The event was a huge success and had a whole host of activities ranging from: volleyball, soccer, card and board games, capoeira, zumba surf and skate workshops put on by yours truly. This was the first ever event as part of the social initiative and development of the area of Playa Ancha, kickstarted by the University of Playa Ancha and supported by various social organizations that work to improve and contribute to the neighborhood.

Sergio Barrientos, grand master of the event, is the director of the sports Club Juventus, in which we teach english. He said, “we have been working for a year and a half with the University of Playa Ancha (UPLA) and other organizations in the cerro, to be able to have sports and recreation, and teach solidarity and companionship to the kids, gives us a lot of spirit. As a leader in Montedónico I am happy to live here and to organize these sport activities

The Valpo Surf Project has been involved in this community since October of 2014. We are so happy to be able to work with this population and to be able to share in the sentiment of sport as a means of mentorship. At the event, we set up in the basketball court with two surf boards and a handful of skateboards. Throughout the day we ran surf and skate tutorials. Some of our students came by and showed off the skills that they already knew to their friends in the neighborhood. There was a great mixture of activities going on, all that promoted healthy and active living, and was open to all members in the community.

Thanks to all who made this event such a great success, we were so glad to be included in it and look forward to more in the future!
